Not every job starts with a homeowner calling us. This one in Amesbury, MA, our home turf, started with a real estate agent. The owner of a three-bedroom, two-bath house had passed away, and the agent was helping the executor of the will get the home ready to sell. She had grown up next door to it. Before the house could go on the market, it needed an estate cleanout: the garage and the furniture had to go.
There was one condition, and it came straight from the family: they did not want the furniture going to a dump. They wanted to know it would end up with someone who would actually use it.
The scope was the garage and the furniture in a couple of rooms. It wasn't a packed-to-the-ceiling job. It was the normal contents of a house someone lived in for a long time: a garage full of the things garages collect, and furniture in the bedrooms and living space.
Two of us handled the whole estate cleanout in about four hours. We sorted as we loaded, the way we do on every job, so that anything worth donating stayed clean, protected, and separate from the rest of the load.
This was the part the family cared about most, so it's the part we were most careful with. From this one house, we donated:
All of that went to Goodwill. One more piece went to an antique store, where it has a better shot at finding the right buyer than it would on a donation floor.
None of that is unusual for us. We donate anything that's donatable and in donatable condition, on every job, whether the customer asks or not. The difference here is that the family asked, and we could tell them exactly where each piece ended up. If you want to see how the sorting works on a normal job, we walk through it in where your junk goes after we haul it, and we cover how donations affect the bill in junk removal cost and donations.
The executor wasn't there. The real estate agent wasn't there. We were given access and trusted to do the job right, and that's how a lot of estate work goes. The people responsible for the house are usually juggling a dozen other things, often from another town or another state, and the last thing they need is to stand in a driveway for four hours supervising a truck.
The one person who did stop by was the agent's father, who still lives next door. He ended up hanging out with us for most of the job, and we talked the whole time. That's Amesbury. On a job like this, in a neighborhood where people have known each other for decades, how you carry yourself matters as much as how fast you load.
This is some of the work we're proudest of, and it's work we do a lot. Whether you're a real estate agent prepping a listing, an executor settling an estate, or a family member trying to figure out where to start, here is what you can expect from us:
