A Moving Cleanout in Newburyport, MA, Our Own Backyard

Newburyport is home for us. Our yard is right next door in Amesbury, and I live in downtown Newburyport myself, a few blocks from the water. So when Greg called about clearing out his house before a move, it was a job in our own neighborhood.

Greg and his wife had lived in Newburyport for more than 25 years. They finally decided to move down south to South Carolina, a place they love. Leaving wasn't easy. Newburyport is a beautiful historic town sitting right on the water, and 25 years is a long time in one house. But the house had sold, and they had three days to be out.

Yard Sales, Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and Still a House Full of Furniture

Greg did everything right before he called us. They held a couple of yard sales and got rid of a good amount of stuff. They listed the bigger pieces on Facebook Marketplace and eBay. But the bulky furniture just wouldn't move: two loveseats, a full sectional, bed frames, mattresses, box springs, and dressers. Sound familiar? It's the same story we cover in why nobody wants your old couch anymore.

So Greg called Dumpster Dogs. We came out, did an in-person estimate, walked the house with him, and gave him a price. He was on board, and we got him on the schedule before the move.

Old Newburyport Houses Have Tight Stairs

Greg's house is close to downtown, where a lot of the homes date anywhere from the 1790s into the early 1900s. They're beautiful, and they were not built for modern furniture. The stairways in Greg's house were narrow and tight.

That mattered most for the sectional on the second floor. When it was delivered, the furniture store had to hoist it up and bring it in through a second-story window, because there was no way it was making it up those stairs. Which meant there was no way it was coming back down them either.

Taking a Sectional Out a Second-Story Window

The house had just sold, and I wasn't willing to risk damaging it three days before they moved out by forcing that sectional down a staircase it never fit up in the first place. Greg kindly took the window out for us, and we lowered the sectional out through the second story, the same way it went in.

It's the kind of job where going slow is the fast way. One scraped wall or cracked banister in a house that just sold turns into a much bigger problem for the homeowner than an extra half hour of careful work.

Everything Else That Came Out of the House

Along with the sectional, we cleared out the rest of the bulky furniture in the house:

  • Two loveseats
  • Three mattresses and box springs, two of them from when the kids still lived at home
  • Two bed frames
  • Three dressers, multiple nightstands, and a desk
  • Multiple rugs and carpets
  • A full metal outdoor furniture set: about ten chairs, a table, and the rest

"This Isn't Just Going to the Dump, Right?"

Greg asked me that as we were loading. It's a question we hear a lot, and it's a fair one. The answer was no. Most of what came out of Greg's house was in good condition, and I'm not going to throw out a perfectly usable couch, nightstand, or rug. We donated the furniture to Goodwill. The mattresses went to mattress recycling, which is where Massachusetts law sends them, and you can read why in our guide to old mattress removal and disposal.

At Dumpster Dogs, we care about where your furniture goes. We sort every load, and anything donatable in donatable condition gets donated. You can see how that works in where your junk goes after we haul it and how donations factor into the bill in junk removal cost and donations.

Moving Out of Newburyport? Here's What We'd Tell You

  • Sell what you can early. Yard sales and listings work best for small, easy items. Bulky furniture is the stuff that won't move.
  • Book the cleanout before your closing date, not after. The last few days before a move are the worst time to discover the sectional won't fit down the stairs.
  • In an older home, ask how the big pieces got in. If something came in through a window, it's probably going out the same way.
