An Estate Cleanout in Methuen, MA, a Street Over From Where I Grew Up

Methuen is my hometown. I grew up here, my grandmother's house was one street over from this job, and I went trick-or-treating in this exact neighborhood as a kid. So when a call came in for a full house cleanout in Methuen, MA, it felt a little different from the usual.

The house belonged to the customer's in-laws. He, his wife, and her two sisters had just moved their mother into an elderly care home, because they couldn't give her the care she needed alongside their own day-to-day lives. That left the house, and everything in it, for the family to deal with.

Walking the House Before We Quoted It

We started with an in-person estimate. He and I walked through the whole house together, room by room, and looked at everything.

His father-in-law wasn't a hoarder. He was a guy who just didn't throw things away. Not trash, but things: tools, household items, decades of stuff that had a use once and never left. That's more common than people think, and it adds up to a lot more volume than you'd guess walking through.

The best part of the house was the basement. His father-in-law had been a barber, and he cut hair right there at home. He had a little barbershop set up in a basement room, chairs and all. It's the kind of detail that reminds you every cleanout is somebody's whole life, not just a pile of stuff.

Why a Dumpster Rental Wasn't Going to Work

The customer's first thought was to rent a dumpster and clear the house out with his wife and her sisters. Two problems. First, the driveway was tight, too tight for a 30-yard dumpster to fit. Second, he and his wife are in their mid-60s, and the job was a lot bigger than it looked.

That's the part people don't see coming. Renting a dumpster and doing it yourself sounds like a weekend. But once you're in it, you're sorting through a lifetime of belongings, carrying every piece out by hand, and fitting it all around work, kids, appointments, and everything else on your plate. What you planned as a weekend turns into a three-week ordeal, and nobody has three weeks to spare. We break down when each option makes sense in our guide to junk removal vs. dumpster rental.

Five Guys, a Tight Driveway, and Two 25-Yard Dumpsters

We squeezed our truck into that tiny driveway and set down a 25-yard dumpster. Five of us worked the job, myself included, and by the end we had filled two 25-yard dumpsters.

Here's some of what came out of that house:

  • Washing machines and a refrigerator, which go to scrap and proper refrigerant handling, not the landfill
  • The chairs from the basement barbershop
  • Countless cups, bowls, dishes, and cookware
  • A garage packed with tools, yard equipment, and decades of odds and ends
  • An old 1970s Schwinn bike

Appliances like the washers and fridge have their own rules in Massachusetts. If you want the details, see our guides to getting rid of an old washer and dryer and getting rid of an old refrigerator.

"I Can Only Imagine How Long It Would've Taken Me"

When we wrapped up, he looked at the house and the full dumpsters and said something I hear on almost every estate cleanout: he couldn't believe the amount of stuff that had been in there, and he could only imagine how long it would have taken him, his wife, and her two sisters to go through all of it and haul it into a dumpster themselves. He said he was glad he went with us.

That reaction is my favorite part of this job. People see the dumpster filling up and they can't believe it all came out of one house. And almost every time, they say the same thing: there's no way we could have done this ourselves.

If You're Facing a Family Estate Cleanout

A lot of families end up exactly where this one was: a parent moves into care or passes away, and suddenly there's a whole house of belongings to sort through on top of everything else. If that's you, here's what we tell people:

  • Get an in-person walkthrough before you decide. Volume is almost always bigger than it looks.
  • Be honest about your time. A dumpster you fill yourself only saves money if you actually have the days and the energy to fill it.
  • Depending on volume, a crew like ours can usually clear a house in a single day, anywhere from two hours to about ten.
