When the owners bought their house in Exeter, New Hampshire, the shed came with it. It was a 9 x 12 two-story shed with a porch attached, left behind by the previous owners, and it wasn't something the new owners wanted to keep. So they called us to tear it down and haul it away.
A two-story shed is a different job than the usual backyard tool shed. There's more structure, more height, and a lot more material to get into a dumpster. Here's how the shed demolition went, start to finish.
We started with the porch attached to the front of the shed. Taking it off first gave us clear access to the main structure and kept us from working around it for the rest of the day.
Next came the roof. Working from the top down is the safe way to take apart a structure like this: you get the heaviest overhead material off while the walls are still standing and holding everything in place.
With the roof off, we took down the walls, saw cuts and sledgehammers, piece by piece. Once we got the shed down to its frame, we stopped for lunch.
After lunch, we cut two holes around one of the main beams, ran a chain through them, and hooked it to the pickup truck. No gas needed. We put the truck in drive, let it roll, and the rest of the structure came down in one pull.
Don't try that at home. A pull like that only works because the porch, roof, and walls were already off. It isn't a shortcut, it's the last step after the careful work is done.
The one real challenge on this job had nothing to do with the shed. Two trees near the structure had root systems running through the area where we'd normally drop the dumpster, so we had to set it farther away than we'd like. That meant a longer carry on every load.
Dumpster placement is something we think about on every demo job. If you're planning your own project and wondering where a dumpster can go and whether you need a permit, our guide to dumpster permits by town in MA and NH covers it.
We cut everything down into manageable pieces so it could be packed neatly into the dumpster. A tight pack fits more debris into the box and keeps lumber from sticking out over the top.
Then we cleaned up everything else that was in the way and picked up all the debris off the ground. The last step was running a large, five-foot magnet over the grass to pull up loose nails and screws. On a demo job, that's the step that matters most after we leave. Nobody wants to find a nail with a lawnmower or a bare foot next summer.
About three and a half hours of solid work, plus a half-hour lunch. We were in and out of the property in under four hours, and the owners got their backyard back from a structure they never wanted in the first place.
