UNH runs a move-out reuse program on campus — it collects from the first day of finals through the day after Commencement and resells at an August move-in sale. But it collects only at UNH-owned housing. Its own guidance sends off-campus residents to thrift shops instead.

Which means thousands of off-campus students clear out in a two-to-three-week window every May, and there is no program at all catching what they leave: couches, mattresses, desks, mini-fridges, rugs, and whatever a departing tenant decided wasn't worth a car trip home. Then it happens again at the August turnover, and on a smaller scale in December.

And the Coupons Make Doing It Yourself Expensive

Durham's transfer station requires a resident sticker, and a bulky waste coupon must be presented at every visit — whether you're bringing a pickup load or a single item.

One coupon comes with the sticker. A second costs $15. Any coupon past the second costs $65 each.

Bulky covers rugs, furniture, large rigid plastic and mattresses. Construction and demolition debris also requires a coupon and special handling, and asbestos, asphaltic pavement, tires, scrap metal and fuel tanks are excluded outright.

A three-bedroom student apartment is easily six or more truckloads. At $65 a coupon past the second, that's north of $400 in coupons alone — before the trips and the two days it takes.

One more catch for property owners: the sticker requires items to originate from the resident's own property in town. A landlord hauling from several units doesn't fit that rule.
