If you last cleared a garage a year ago, the system is different now. Groveland changed haulers in mid-2026 and the rules tightened.

Every household gets one trash cart and one recycling cart on alternating weeks. Residents must use the larger cart for at least thirty days before requesting a smaller one, and the town is not currently offering extra carts. And after the transition ended, overflow bags are no longer accepted. One cart is one cart.

Curbside also won't take mattresses and box springs, or construction and demolition debris including wood, vinyl and hard plastic, loose bags, tires, batteries, hazardous materials, commercial garbage, grills, stones or auto parts.

For anything on that list, the town's answer is to haul it yourself to the transfer station in Georgetown — out of town, priced per item, $75 for the mattress you couldn't put at the curb.

The only municipal drop-off is cardboard, at Town Hall on Main Street and the Highway Garage on Center Street, plus textile bins at a handful of locations.

For a town with roughly 26 surviving colonial houses spanning 1668 through the 1790s — clustered on Center, Garrison, King, Main, Salem, School, Sylvan and Washington Streets — that's a real mismatch. Add the South Groveland mill housing left over from the Groveland Mills, which ran from the 1850s through 1928, and you have a lot of old buildings with deep storage and one 65-gallon cart between them.
