The Transfer Station Won't Take a Mattress or a Board

Essex's Landing Road station is open Tuesday, Friday and Saturday only, with a sticker required — bona fide residents, maximum two per household, permanently affixed to the windshield. Trash goes in pay-as-you-throw bags bought by the roll.

Bulk items are priced per piece — one rate for non-Freon appliances and furniture, a higher one for anything with Freon.

But the prohibited list is long and it matters: brush, tree limbs, stumps, demolition materials or building materials; tires, batteries, motor oil; pesticides, asbestos, hazardous waste, paint — and mattresses, box springs and textiles.

Three days a week, and a board, a branch and a mattress are all refused. The town's own answer for building material is a transfer station most of an hour away.
